n this black-and-white photo taken back in the 1920s, football players wearing leather helmets try to tackle a running back in a local high school football game. Leather helmets were not made mandatory in the NFL until 1943. The 1920's are often referred to as the “Golden Age” of American sports. With more free time and better transportation, sports became a more popular alternative. Tacoma's Lincoln Bowl and Stadium became popular venues for sporting events.Lexicon
