Description

A group of Santa Clara football players, including Gail Bruce and Joe Salatino, pose on the campus lawn wearing their letterman jackets. Bruce was an outstanding football and basketball player in the early 1940s and went on to have a pro career with the San Francisco 49ers. While at Puyallup High, Bruce was a three-year letter winner in football, basketball and baseball and helped the Vikings football team to a 9-1 record his senior season. On the basketball court, Bruce finished his senior season with 247 points in 14 conference games and earned first-team All-Conference honors. He went on to play at the University of Washington, earning three letters playing football and went on to be drafted by Pittsburgh. He played with San Francisco from 1948-51. He was inducted into the Tacoma-Pierce County Sports Hall of Fame in 2006. Salatino was inducted into the Pierce County-Tacoma Sports Hall of Fame for baseball and football in 1959 after an illustrious career at Bellarmine Prep as well as a Hall of Fame career at Santa Clara. Salatino also played basketball and was part of the Pacific Northwest champion Alt Heidelberg team in 1937-38.
