Description

Joe Hemel, third row, far left, was a Lincoln High School graduate who played baseball and football for Washington State College (now university) and coached the 1947 freshman football team. Hemel graduated from Lincoln in 1937 excelling in both football and baseball. He played outfield and first base for the Cougars at Washington State and played football against Texas A&M in the Stadium Bowl in Tacoma on the eve of the Pearl Harbor invasion on Dec. 7, 1941. Hemel played for numerous baseball teams in the state including in Enumclaw, Spokane and later at the College of Puget Sound.
