Description

Tacoma's Davy Ward referees this amateur bout between two young boxers. One fighter struggles to get back to his feet after getting knocked down. Ward was a frequent participant in boxing, refereeing fights across the Northwest. He was also there refereeing at the Tacoma Golden Gloves events over the years. Before Ward starting refereeing in 1948, he boxed professionally. He was a protege of Freddie Steele, the world middleweight champ who trained in Tacoma. For some of Ward's first fights, Steele was in Ward's corner giving advice. Ward had boxing in his blood. His father, Jim Ward, had been the light heavyweight champ of Great Britain.
