Description

Tacoma's Mike McMurtry (far right) stands with eight other boxers holding plaques for winning the NCAA boxing championship in 1954. From left to right, the other boxers are G. Garber, S. Naya, V. Palumbo, J. Grnager, H. Odon, B. Meath, Gordy Gladson, A. Kois, and McMurtry. After college, Mike joined the Marines and he won the All-Marine championship. Mike transferred from Gonzaga to Idaho State when Gonzaga dropped its boxing program after the 1952 season. Mike reached the NCAA tournament four times. Mike and his older brother, Pat, grew up boxing. When they were kids, they'd sometimes spar each other before the main event at a local fight and fans would throw money. Their father, Clarence McMurtry, would use that money to buy boxing equipment for his kids. McMurtry holds plaque 1999.14.4
