Brothers Mike McMurtry (left) and Pat McMurtry, two of the best boxers to ever come out of Tacoma, discuss boxing strategy with their trainer Frank “Chi Chi” Britt during a workout at the gym. Mike won 207 fights and lost only 7 over a 12-year amateur boxing career. Pat was a successful heavyweight boxer and in his professional career he was ranked as high as fifth in the world. In 1958, “Irish Pat” fought Canadian heavyweight champ George Chuvalo in New York's Madison Square Garden in a nationally televised fight and the Tacoma boxer won. That set up a possible fight with heavyweight champ Floyd Patterson, but the fight never happened because of a contract dispute. The McMurtry brothers attended Lincoln High School in Tacoma but didn't participate in any sports, concentrating on boxing.Lexicon
