Description

Tacoma's Mike McMurtry (far right) stands among the champions of their weight class at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate Boxing Association tournament in Sacramento, Calif., on March 18-20, 1954. McMurtry had a spectacular amateur career, winning a NCAA title while at Idaho State in 1954. McMurtry boxed for both Gonzaga and Idaho State while in college. After college, McMurtry joined the Marines and continued to box and continued to win. Mike and his older brother, Pat, are considered to be two of the greatest fighters to come out of Tacoma. They're certainly the best brother duo to box. Every Christmas as young kids, the McMurtry brothers got boxing gloves from their parents.
