Description

A photograph at one of Tacoma legend Ben Cheney's parties with Cheney Studs and their wives. Cheney held many social gatherings to celebrate his competitive sports teams as a way for the players and their wives to get together when the Studs weren't playing. This photo was taken shortly before Marv Harshman left Pacific Lutheran University men's basketball team to coach Washington State University men's basketball. Shortly after this photo was taken, Marv Harshman left coaching at Pacific Lutheran College to coach at WSU. The Cheney Studs were one of the top semi-pro teams on the West Coast attracting former All- America college players as former ABA/NBA players to their team. They traveled to Alaska, California, Montana, Oregon, Idaho, and throughout Washington in the 1950s playing the Harlem Clowns as well as in other exhibitions. Gate receipts helped compensate them for their time and Ben Cheney made up the difference.
