Tacoma's Herman Brix prepares to compete in the shot put as two spectators watch in an undated autographed photo. It was signed Herman Brix (Bruce Bennett) in blue ink and 1931 in black.
Brix, a 1924 graduate of Stadium High School, went on to play offensive tackle for the University of Washington football team at the 1926 Rose Bowl vs. Alabama. Brix won the NCAA title in the shot put in 1927 and qualified for the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam.
Brix set a then-world record with his throw of 51 feet, 8 inches and ended up winning the silver medal.
Brix moved to California and started acting in motion pictures, landing the lead role in "The New Adventures of Tarzan."
Brix, trying to avoid being typecast as Tarzan, changed his name to Bruce Bennett. He landed his biggest role in "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre," being out Ronald Reagan for the part.
The Internet Movie Database lists Brix/Bennett with 151 acting credits.Lexicon
