Description

Tacoma's Herman Brix (501) signed a photocopy of a photo from the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam with "Bruce Bennett (Herman Brix)." Brix, a Stadium High graduate who starred as a lineman in football for the University of Washington, won the silver medal in the shot put in Amsterdam, with John Kuck (544) of the United States winning the gold medal. Germany's Emil Hirschfeld, center, won the bronze. Brix set an Olympic record with his first throw of 51 feet, 8 inches. Kuck later topped Brix's mark with a throw of 52 feet, 3/4 inch. Brix went on to become a film and TV star in Hollywood, appearing as Tarzan and, after changing his name to Bruce Bennett, starred as Bert Pierce in 1945's "Mildred Pierce."
