Description

Tacoma's Herman Brix signed this photocopy of a photo from the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam with "Bruce Bennett (Herman Brix)." Brix, a 1924 graduate of Stadium High School, finished second in the shot put behind teammate John Kuck (544). Emil Hirschfeld of Germany, center, won the bronze. Brix, who started the 1926 Rose Bowl as a standout offensive lineman for the University of Washington, later moved to California to pursue an acting career. He was chosen for the starring role in 1932's "Tarzan the Ape Man" but separated a shoulder while filming "Touchdown!" and Johnny Weissmuller landed the coveted role. Fearing his role as Tarzan in 1935's "The New Adventures of Tarzan" and his near-miss with "Tarzan the Ape Man" had him typecast, Brix took a hiatus from movies, took acting classes and changed his name to Bruce Bennett. He continued his successful career in movies and television, appearing in five episodes of the TV series "Perry Mason" and four episodes of "Lassie."
