In this image taken by the Fort Lewis Sentinel newspaper, Former world heavyweight champ Jack Dempsey (second from the left) in his Coast Guard uniform appeared at Fort Lewis in the early 1940s. Elliott Metcalf (fourth from left) was a Tacoma sportswriter best known for his “On the Lam” column. Dempsey, who made numerous public appearances during World War II, was at Fort Lewis to help sell war bonds.
