Tacoma native and Lakeside High School graduate Booth Gardner had a love of soccer even before he went on to become the Governor of Washington from 1985-1993. Gardner, shown in this photo returning soccer balls during a practice session for the Tacoma Cozars junior girls team, owned the Tacoma Tides for its one year of existence in the American Soccer League in 1976, and in 1978 also co-owned the Colorado Caribous in the North American Soccer League, was founder and sponsor of the Cozars as well as coach. The Cozars were a national powerhouse in the 1980s. Gardner was inducted postumously into the Washington Youth Soccer Association Hall of Fame in 2019. Gardner died of Parkinson’s Disease in 2013 at the age of 76.
