A black and white photograph of Ben “Benny G.” Hammond posing for a picture in street clothes and holding a football. Hammond was the founder general manager and coach of the Tacoma Tyees semiprofessional football team. The Tacoma Tyees’ inaugural season came in 1962. Hammond was a University of Washington football alumnus where he received All-Pacific Coast Conference honorable mention as a linebacker during his senior season with the Huskies. Hammond was drafted by the San Francisco 49er’s but his playing career was when he was inducted in the U.S. Army. He joined the Seattle Ramblers semipro team where Hammond played two seasons before moving to Tacoma.Lexicon
