Texaco Gas Station on the Northwest corner of Harbor Road and Route 7 in the 1960's. The station was built shortly after 1952. The automobile in the foreground is advertising an old car meet hosted by the Shelburne Museum.
In 1937, oil company Texaco hired Walter Dorwin Teague to design a gas station that would represent the modern petrol business. So important to the history of the automobile culture, a replica of the station that Teague designed is on display at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan.
“A combination of several design disciplines (styling, package design, product design, and graphic design), Walter Dorwin Teague's Texaco station suggested consistency, simplicity, and cleanliness -- a strong corporate identity that enabled Texaco to stand out in a highly competitive marketplace.” - Henry Ford Museum website - click on weblink below.
Walter Dorwin Teague also worked for the Eastman Kodak company to design their very popular “Brownie” camera. Teague is considered the father of Industrial Design.Photograph Details
