1976. .457Description
Steel - metal adze head with hardwood curved handle, probably oak.
An adze differs from an axe in having its blade set at right angles to the handle. The following information was recorded in 1976 "hand adze, used for dressing timber. Unusual because it has a small pick on the back. Steel blade with bent wooden handle. From Seller's collection. Called a Shipwright's Adze. Small pick used to drive down broken nails. " This adze does not completely fit the description of a shipwright's adze. This adze fits the description of an American Lipped or Dubbing Adze. "The edges of the blade are turned upwards on each side to give a trenching cut, and the pin poll is spiked. It cuts a square rather than a rounded channel; this is said to prevent side - slipping when trimming. It was also used for the process known as 'clubbing' - the cutting of scores or notches across the gain at intervals along the beam down to a chalk line, after which the wood between is quickly hewn off with an axe." p.24 Dictionary of Tools R.A.
