Baby's long dress, made of white cotton lawn, probably used as a christening gown. High, round neckline, finished with hand-stitched bias binding. Front yoke has central commercially-embroidered whitework panel in satin stitch and "drawn threadwork", featuring floral swirls, with a plain lawn panel each side. Front skirt cut with central panel and a panel each side, extending around to meet central back panel. Central back seam opening finished with hand stitching and closed with ties at neckline and yoke seam. Skirt gathered onto yoke with irregular fine gathers. Long sleeves, finished with narrow hem. Lower skirt edge finished with an embroidered insertion which would have a ribbon run through it, then a fine lace/net insertion featuring a leafing scroll motif that has two different orientations, then a wide panel of the same embroidered whitework as was used in the yoke, which is finished with a wide, fine lace/net edging with similar, larger, motifs to the insertion; these motifs all have the same orientation.Acquisition
