Young woman’s “waist” or blouse, ivory china silk, over a white cotton broadcloth foundation/lining. Hand and machine stitching, and lining piecing, perhaps reworked from another garment. Front has fake square ”yoke” of many rows of vertical, hand-stitched ruching. Bottom of “yoke” marked with narrow row of gathered silk fabric [appears to be different material from blouse fabric] centred with a very narrow black velvet ribbon. Fullness that was suppressed in yoke is darted in at side fronts and gathered in at lower edge in centre front area, to form “pouter pigeon silhouette” front. High, round neck is finished with continuous self fabric bias binding, from right back shoulder to right front shoulder, where it is closed with four hooks and thread loops. Back cut in one piece, with similar square yoke and gathering at lower edge. No darts in outer fabric, but two darts in each part of back foundation [right back is of broadcloth material only]. Back closed with nine metal hooks and loops on inside centre back. Right back armhole and side edge closed with eight metal hooks and thread eyes along right back side seam, under armhole. Lower edge finished with cotton facing Two-piece, narrow, set-in sleeves, mounted over broadcloth foundation. Two small darts in each back armhole of foundation only. Slight gathering/easing in back sleeve seam in elbow area. Lower edge of sleeves falls about mid forearm and is shaped, front and back, with a wide scallop. Front edge finished with two spaced rows of narrow black velvet ribbon, back, with only one row. From mid forearm to wrist is a “cuff” of ruched fabric, echoing the yoke.Acquisition
