1971.J.171Description
Axe with a broad metal blade. Wooded handle appears to be relatively new. Metal head attached to wooden handle with a single large rivet. R.A. Salaman, "Dictionary of Tools," p. 49-50 describes a broad axe as "a name sometimes given to short-handled Axes with one characteristic in common - a rather broad blade i.e. wide in relation to its length. They are mainly of the Side Axe group, such as the Wheelwright's and Cooper's Axes, and are used for squaring logs or for making railway sleepers and for squaring timbers of all kinds." This may be a Pennsylvania Squaring Axe. The cutting edge of the blade measures 30.2 cm.Acquisition
