Pincushion doll, moulded ceramic head and torso, fabric skirt. Head and torso of a young, early 19th century woman, with blonde hair styled in a topknot, hand-painted black eyes, pink cheeks and lips, wearing a low-cut, light blue bodice with short, white sleeves finished with frills. A long gold ceramic chain around her neck is looped around the thumb of her upraised right had. Her left hand is raised to touch her hair and shows the sleeve frill falling back. Torso joined to pincushion form shaped like a belled skirt. Pincushionform covered with fabric printed in the upper area with vertical pink-on-white shadow stripes, to suggest pleats and the lower area, a deep pale pink plain fabric band. Skirt is gathered onto torso, with the join hidden by a tightly-gathered pink silk ribbon. Base finished with circle of pink silk, handsewn in place. Underside of back neckplate has evidence of a black-painted ceramic mark, but back edge is chipped.Acquisition
