Green papered (?) wooden 1910[? – see remarks] jewelry or trinket box/chest/coffret. Front profile of lid has camel-backed shape, with bust of young brunette woman with hair in a bun, brown eyes, and white dress, facing towards viewer’s right, holding a bouquet of pink and yellow roses. Light blue background with cream coloured pattern behind her. Image surrounded by embossed raised filigree design. Remainder of box covered in green paper with pattern of small gold flowers in background, and larger white and grey flowers in foreground. Box has ogee profile. Edges of box have narrow green raised trim, embossed with tiny flowers [perhaps forget-me-nots]. Entire box is coated in clear glossy material – possibly celluloid veneer. Decorative brass raised filigree clasp on front of box. Back has two small brass hinges, each with etched filigree design. Bottom of box previously covered by uncoated paper with small brown floral design – most of this paper has come off except for a section near back. Inside of lid has cursive letters which do not appear to spell anything in English. [letters in top left appear to be “1 Gj” or possibly “1 Dz” for dozen, top right: “glorijvb” or possibly “Hairpins”, and bottom right: “Lut” or “Lutt”]. Hinged places at back of lid reinforced from inside with one inch wide strips of white fabric to prevent lid from opening beyond ninety degrees. Inside lining refinished with teal fabric [nylon taffeta?].Acquisition
