Nightgown in white fabric, probably cotton.
French seams at sides and hem are machine stitched. Nightgown has 'A' line silhouette. Cap sleeves. Triangular-shaped collar, forming V neck at front. There is embroidery at centre front (embroidered floral design w. dragonfly, also initial in gothic script 'G'), on shoulders, and on collar. On either side of shoulders, small tucks have been made - 3 on each side which are hand-stitched. There is a lace inset on either side between neck and triangular piece of collar. There is a lace edging around neck and collar and on sleeves/armholes. Lace appears to be cotton; machine made. Embroidery all white. Techniques include Stem Stitch, Satin Stitch, French Knots.
Near top; front left side a small rectangular piece of fabric has been added - possibly mended with large overcasting stitches. This piece of fabric has an edging of french knots with a small cutwork floral motif in centre. Marks indicate a similar piece may have been attached on other side of front - probably as a belt holder.
A length of pale blue satin ribbon was found with gown. This would have formed an empire waist.Acquisition
