Lady's shoehorn, probably part of a dressing table set. Shoehorn made of steel plated with shiny white metal coating. Narrow teardrop shape, with shallow concavity and varying in thickness from thin at distal end to thick at spool-milled bolster, which tapers to form long tang. Stamped on upper surface: "STEEL/ENGLISH MAKE." Two-part, thin guage silver metal, hollow handle, elongated teardrop shape, now detached from tang. Embossed on both sides, elaborate leafing scroll-and-lattice design, with scrolled cartouche area at proximal end for an engraved initial or monogram. On underside of handle, in the lattice design area, are two sets of hallmarks, the maker's mark: "G & C L [possible with a superscript "D" following the "L"]" and three hallmarks, an anchor, a lion passant, and a lower case serifed "h." The first two identify Birmingham as the origin of this silver and the third is the year of the stamp, thought to be 1903.Acquisition
