A school desk / chair set, one in front of the other (the desk at the back). Made of cedar (?) and highly varnished; it has quite intricately designed metal legs ending on wooden slats. The seat hinges up and down and the desk lid hinges down over a six-inch deep container for storing exercise book and readers. There is a long shallow "well" for storing pens and pencils. A round hole cut in the desk top ( in the right hand corner) is for holding a bottle of ink or an inkwell. There is a large number "1" inside a circle incised in both metal legs.Acquisition
