Description

Child's left shoe last made of hardwood, with a varnished finish [now deteriorated]. Last made in two pieces, heel and vamp-toe, which are joined with a horizontal rod that allows for a slight articulation of the last. Inside heel is stamped in black: "Vulcan/11-51". Outside heel stamped in black: "J 39". Instep stamped in black "5 1/2 D" and impressed in the toe area is "5 1/2/D". Top of heel section has been built up with two thin layers of black-stained wood and in the top heel surface is a metal-lined hole for placing on last stand. Toe sole area stamped in black "5 1/2 D" and heel "sole" area covered with a metal plate [zinc? lead?] shaped to fit heel contours.
