Information from 1976 accession book, "Old tablecloth. This was made by Mrs. Edith Ravenhill for use in Afternoon Teas. She was a pupil of Kensington School of Art and made this for her mother. Approx. 100 years old. Embroidered floral design with ribbon edging." The Art School referred to may actually be the Royal School of Needlework at Kensington, London, England. The fabric is an off-white silk moire. Twisted silk embroidery thread has been used for the embroidery. The design consists of four floral spray depicting wild roses in yellow and pink, their foliage is in shade of olive green. Other foliage is a silvery grey-green. Entwined with the floral design is a ribbon motif which is in shades of grey-blue. The edges of the cloth are decorated with a satin ribbon of a blue-grey colour. The ribbon has been gathered giving it a ruffled effect and is attached in a scalloped pattern forming a border. Ink, as from a transfer, is visible in places around the edges of the embroidery.Acquisition
