One-piece, empire-style wedding dress, (circa 1911) made of cream gauze which is woven with widely-spaced satin weave vertical stripes. Cream silk satin trim. Front bodice has deep V inset of silk honeycomb net, backed with fine silk tulle, which continues over the shoulders to form a shallow, semi-circular yoke for the back bodice. High collar of same fabric, stiffened with five celluloid stays. Yoke and inset bordered with a wide bias band of cream silk satin, embroidered with scattered bullion knots, and finished with a gathered satin bow with bullion knot decoration, at point of inset. Fullness in front and back shoulder areas suppressed with several spaced rows of ruching and the fullness is supported by a fitted silk underbodice, which also forms a "modesty panel" in the lower area of the front inset. Waistline defined by similar band, finished with a similar bow at wearer's left waistline and a bow at centre back [I. Jones 20231012 This bow is made of the same fabric as the bottom band and is now similarly shattered]. This band also controls the skirt fullness, back and front. Lower edge of skirt was originally finished with a deep band of satin, but this is now completely shattered and only the bullion knots that attached it remain. Centre back opening extends to hipline and is closed with many hooks and worked thread loops. Skirt supported by a silk lining seamed to underbodice, with the opening closed with many hooks and eyes. Boned, back and front, in waistline area. Lower edge of skirt lining has attached deep frill to correspond with skirt band and another, more gathered, small frill is attached to bottom edge. Long, set-in, slim sleeves, above elbow of silk lining fabric, remainder of the silk net, underlined with tulle, are finished with a narrow satin binding and knots. Elbow-length oversleeves of dress fabric, finished with knot-decorated satin band, with bow at central area.Acquisition
