Woven Basket With HandlesEntry/Object ID
1977. .043Description
Long rectangular basket with lid and deer hide handles. Flat base, slightly convex sides. Zigzag pattern near rim creates a series of triangular holes in basket.
There are 4 design fields on the body of the basket, characteristic of the Coast Salish. The bottom field has imbricated rows of cherry bark and elymus tritichoides. The second row from the bottom is completely covered with imbrication, the long sides have a series of diagonal patterns. At each end there is an imbricated hand-like design. The design of hands were often associated with the supernatural - this basket may have been used by a shaman to hold his/her equipment. The designs on one side of the basket are animal like - possibly could represent a deer. The third design field is two rows of coiling, bundled to create an openwork effect. The final row consists of two rows - the bottom row is beaded with cherry bark, the top imbricated with elymus tritichoides and dyed cherry bark. The lid is attached with two deer hide thongs, and has a series of beaded cherry bark and elymus tritichoides running through the centre.Acquisition
