The Simeone Archives has a folder with 108 photographs of Mario Andretti. We have broken them into approximately 20-photograph groups and created separate entries in CatalogIt for each group. This section has half-portrait or headshot photographs. Below are a few lines about Mario Andretti's years. Early Years Mario Gabriele Andretti was born February 28, 1940, in Montona, Istria, then part of the Kingdom of Italy. His childhood was shaped by geopolitical upheaval: after World War II, the region became part of Yugoslavia, prompting the Andretti family to flee and spend seven years in a refugee camp in Lucca, Italy. In 1955, the family emigrated to Nazareth, Pennsylvania, where Mario and his twin brother Aldo quickly immersed themselves in American grassroots racing. By 1959, the brothers were competing on local dirt tracks, and Mario’s talent propelled him rapidly toward USAC Championship Cars.Collection
