Richard James David “Dickie” Attwood is a British race‑car driver, born April 4, 1940, in Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, England. He competed in Formula One between 1964 and 1969 for teams including BRM, Lotus, and Cooper, entering 17 Grands Prix, with no wins, one podium finish, and 11 points. Away from Formula One, he was highly regarded as a sports‑car driver, achieving his greatest success by winning the 1970 24 Hours of Le Mans in a Porsche 917, a landmark victory that gave Porsche its first overall win in the race.
Attwood’s successes included strong early performances in Formula Junior and Formula Two, a notable second place and fastest lap at the 1968 Monaco Grand Prix, and especially his endurance‑racing achievements culminating in the Le Mans victory. However, his Formula One career was relatively modest: he never won a Grand Prix or championship, had only a single podium, and often struggled with uncompetitive machinery or limited opportunities, leading to his departure from F1 after 1969.Collection
