Description

Giancarlo Baghetti was an Italian Formula One driver born 25 December 1934 in Milan. He remains famous for a singular, unmatched achievement: he won the 1961 French Grand Prix on his World Championship debut, driving a privateer Ferrari 156 — the only driver in F1 history to win his first championship race outright. Before that debut, he had already won two non‑championship F1 races at Syracuse and Naples, giving him an extraordinary hat‑trick of victories in his first three Formula One starts. After his sensational rookie season, Baghetti joined Ferrari full‑time in 1962, then moved through teams including ATS, Centro Sud, Brabham, Parnell, and Lotus between 1963 and 1967. Though he never again reached the heights of his debut year, he remained active in both Formula One and sports‑car racing, winning the 1966 1000cc European Touring Car Championship with Abarth and finishing second in the 1962 Targa Florio. Baghetti retired from racing in 1968 and later worked as a journalist. He died in Milan on 27 November 1995, aged 60.
