Description

Bob Bergstrom was born December 11, 1932, in South Gate, California, and became an active IMSA and SCCA road‑racing driver from the early 1970s through the mid‑1980s. His career covered at least 118 to 121 race entries, depending on the database, with most of his activity in IMSA GTU and GTO competition. He drove primarily Porsche machinery, especially the Porsche 924 Carrera GTR and various 911‑based cars, and also raced Mazda RX‑7s, Oldsmobile Toronados, and occasional Honda and Chevron entries. His peak competitive years were 1973 and 1979, including a GTU championship in 1973 and a second‑place GTU championship finish in 1979. Across his career, he earned 7 wins, 27 podiums, 21 poles, and 19 fastest laps, with Daytona, Sebring, Road Atlanta, and Lime Rock among his most frequent circuits. Bergstrom’s career mixed strong class results with the mechanical attrition typical of IMSA’s era. He recorded 69 finishes and 49 retirements in the Racing Sports Cars archive, a 58 percent finishing rate, and often partnered with co‑drivers such as Tom Winters, Jim Cook, and John Morton. His best overall race results were several second‑place finishes, and he collected seven class wins even when not winning outright. Bergstrom died April 15, 2025. He is remembered as a steady, technically capable GT and endurance driver who built a long career in one of American sports‑car racing’s most competitive periods.
