Randy Bethea was a Black American open‑wheel driver who raced in Formula Vee and Formula Super Vee during the 1970s. He was associated with the Black American Racers Association, which supported Black drivers, mechanics, and team members in professional motorsport. Bethea competed in SCCA events and select national Super Vee races, often in Volkswagen‑powered machinery with sponsorship from Viceroy and VW dealers.
Super Vee was a legitimate stepping‑stone series — many drivers used it to reach Formula Atlantic and even IndyCar. Bethea’s participation made him one of the first Black drivers in American formula-car racing, a milestone that remains underrecognized today.
The round patch on the right chest is the BARE / Black American Racers emblem — the organization founded by Leonard W. Miller to support Black drivers in professional motorsport.
This patch is extremely rare and historically important.Collection
