Description

Tom Bigelow was born Thomas Allan Bigelow on October 31, 1939, in Elkhorn, Wisconsin. He built his reputation in midget cars, sprint cars, and Indy-style championship car racing, competing in the USAC and CART series. He raced in nine consecutive Indianapolis 500s from 1974 through 1982, with a best finish of sixth place in 1977. Bigelow's greatest successes came in sprint car and midget competition. He won the 1978 USAC Sprint Car Championship, captured the 1984 USAC National Midget Championship, recorded 52 USAC sprint car victories, and was inducted into both the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame and the National Midget Auto Racing Hall of Fame. Despite many starts, he never won an Indianapolis 500 or a championship car race, and he finished only 40th in his lone NASCAR Cup start because of engine trouble. His longevity and versatility had him racing competitively across several forms of motorsport for decades, and he became regarded as one of the most respected sprint car and midget drivers of his era.
