Clemente Biondetti was born on August 18, 1898, in Buddusò, Sardinia, Italy, and became one of the most successful endurance racers of his era. He is best known for winning the Mille Miglia a record four times (1938, 1947, 1948, and 1949), a mark that stood as the benchmark in the classic event. He also won the Targa Florio in 1948 and 1949 and achieved notable results in prewar Grand Prix racing, including victory in the 1939 Coppa Acerbo voiturette race. Although circuit racing brought him only limited success, his skill in long-distance road races made him one of Italy’s most respected drivers.
Despite his dominance in endurance competition, Biondetti never achieved major success in Formula One. His only World Championship start came at the 1950 Italian Grand Prix in a Ferrari-Jaguar hybrid of his own creation, where engine problems forced him to retire. Much of his career was also interrupted by World War II, and he resumed top-level racing at an age when most drivers had already retired. After battling cancer for several years, Clemente Biondetti died in Florence, Italy, on February 24, 1955, at the age of 56.Collection
