Marc Birkigt was a Swiss mechanical engineer, automotive pioneer, and aviation innovator who was born on March 8, 1878, in Geneva, Switzerland, and died on March 15, 1953, in Versoix, Switzerland. He is best known as the co-founder and chief engineer of Hispano-Suiza, the renowned luxury automobile manufacturer established in 1904. Birkigt played a major role in advancing automobile engineering and later became influential in aviation through his design of powerful aircraft engines used in World War I fighter aircraft.
His successes included designing the famous Hispano-Suiza H6 luxury car, developing aircraft engines that powered notable fighters such as the SPAD VII and SPAD XIII, and creating the HS.404 20 mm autocannon, one of the most important aircraft weapons of World War II. However, his early career also saw failures. The first automotive companies he worked for and helped develop, including La Cuadra and a later successor enterprise, suffered financial collapse and bankruptcy before Hispano-Suiza achieved lasting success. Despite these setbacks, Birkigt's engineering talent ultimately made him one of the most respected figures in both automotive and aviation history.Collection
