Bob Bondurant was born on April 27, 1933, in Evanston, Illinois, and became one of America’s most accomplished road racers. He raced for legendary teams including Shelby American, Ferrari, and Eagle, competed in Formula One from 1965 to 1966, and earned international recognition after winning the GT class at the 1964 24 Hours of Le Mans in a Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe. In 1965, he helped Shelby American and Ford win the FIA Manufacturers’ World Championship by winning seven of ten races. Beyond competition, he had a lasting impact on motorsports through the Bob Bondurant School of High Performance Driving, which trained generations of racers and performance drivers.
Despite his many successes, Bondurant’s Formula One career produced no Grand Prix victories, podiums, or championships, and a devastating crash at Watkins Glen in 1967 effectively ended his professional driving career after he suffered multiple serious injuries. Rather than leave the sport, he turned his focus to driver education and became one of the most influential driving instructors in the United States. Bondurant died on November 12, 2021, in Paradise Valley, Arizona, at the age of 88.Collection
