Neil Bonnett was born on July 30, 1946, in Hueytown, Alabama, and became one of NASCAR’s most popular drivers during an 18-year Cup Series career. He earned 18 NASCAR Cup victories and 20 pole positions, with major wins including the Southern 500 in 1981, back-to-back World 600 victories in 1982 and 1983, and back-to-back Busch Clash wins in 1983 and 1984. He also won the 1988 Goodyear NASCAR 500 in Australia, the first NASCAR race held outside North America. His best season points finish was fourth place in 1985.
Despite his success, Bonnett faced significant setbacks. Mechanical problems and team issues hurt his performance in some seasons, and a severe crash at Darlington in 1990 caused a brain injury that left him with amnesia and chronic dizziness, forcing him away from racing for a time. While attempting a comeback, he was fatally injured during practice for the 1994 Daytona 500 on February 11, 1994, in Daytona Beach, Florida, at age 47.Collection
