Dick Brooks was a long‑time NASCAR Cup Series driver best known for his consistency, durability, and his upset victory in the 1973 Talladega 500. Born April 14, 1942, in Porterville, California, he competed in the Cup Series from 1969 to 1985, running 358 races over 17 seasons. His career included 1 win, 57 top‑five finishes, 150 top‑tens, and four top‑ten points seasons between 1975 and 1978. He earned Rookie of the Year in 1969 and spent much of his career driving for underfunded but respected independent teams, most notably Junie Donlavey.
Brooks’ lone Cup victory came at Talladega, where he held off Buddy Baker by more than seven seconds — a defining moment in his career. He was known for mechanical sympathy, steady racecraft, and the ability to get the most out of modest equipment. After retiring from driving, he briefly worked as a NASCAR broadcaster. Brooks died on February 1, 2006, in his hometown of Porterville at age 63.Collection
