Porsche wins at the 1990 World Challenge of Tampa. The race was won by James Weaver, driving a Porsche 962C for Dyson Racing. He completed 110 laps and finished ahead of the factory Nissan NPT‑90 entries
The World Challenge of Tampa was a late‑1980s sports car race held on the temporary Tampa Street Circuit at the Florida State Fairgrounds, forming part of the IMSA schedule during its brief run from 1988 to 1990. The event featured top‑level prototype machinery from both the IMSA GTP and Group C categories, attracting major teams and drivers such as John Morton, Geoff Brabham, and Oscar Larrauri. The 1988 running, officially the GTE World Challenge of Tampa, showcased intense competition between Nissan and Porsche, with Morton and Brabham winning in the Nissan GTP ZX‑T. The race underwent scheduling changes—IMSA even moved the 1989 event to October after another race was canceled—highlighting both the ambition and instability of the Tampa street experiment. Though short‑lived, the World Challenge of Tampa remains a fascinating footnote in IMSA history, remembered for its fast prototypes and unique fairgrounds setting.Collection
