Description

J.C. Agajanian was born on June 16, 1913, in San Pedro, Los Angeles, California, and died on May 5, 1984, in Gardena, California. Known affectionately as “Aggie,” he was one of the most influential figures in American motorsports history. Although he dreamed of being a race car driver, he instead became a legendary race promoter and team owner. His cars competed in the Indianapolis 500 for more than three decades, winning twice—first with Troy Ruttman in 1952 and later with Parnelli Jones in 1963. Agajanian was also instrumental in bringing the Indy 500 to television in 1961, helping expand the sport’s popularity nationwide. His trademark cowboy hat and boots made him a recognizable personality in the racing world, and he was deeply involved in both short-track racing and national championship events. Agajanian’s career was marked by both successes and challenges. He became known as the “dean of car owners” during the 1950s and 1960s, continuously fielding competitive cars at Indy from 1948 through 1972. His teams set multiple track records and secured pole positions, with drivers like Walt Faulkner, Bill Vukovich, and Chuck Stevenson achieving victories under his banner. Beyond racing, he founded the United States Auto Club (USAC) in 1956 and even invented the now-standard air jack used in pit stops. Despite his enormous influence, Agajanian never fulfilled his personal dream of being a driver himself—a failure he often acknowledged—but his legacy as a promoter, innovator, and team owner far outweighed that limitation. Today, he is remembered as a pioneer who shaped American motorsport culture and was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 1992 For more about J.C.
