Mercedes Steering Wheel Hub BadgeEntry/Object ID
2024.14.241Description
This image shows a Mercedes steering wheel hub. The right-side arrow symbolizes electricity and indicates a downward advance in timing. The left-side arrow indicates a downward direction to increase the throttle.
After the merger with Benz in 1926, the company changed its design. Mercedes was moved to the top, with Benz at the bottom, and a wreath separated them. The initial thought was that this hub had to be from a pre-merger car. But our Curator, Kevin Kelly, thought it was possible that later cars would have used this as they might have had additional stock to use up. That would make the date somewhere between 1916 and 1928.
The three-pointed star is still used today. This quote was taken from a Mercedes-Benz of Portland website and explains the meaning of the three points: "Together, the Mercedes-Benz star’s 3 points represent the company’s drive for universal motorization — but each point also has its own meaning. The points represent land, sea, and air environments; the company believed they would one day dominate with Mercedes-Benz engines. Mercedes changed their logo in 1926 when they merged with Benz."Collection
