Description

Peter John Arundell (often misspelled “Arondell”) was a British race‑car driver born on November 8, 1933, in Ilford, Essex, England; he died on June 16, 2009, in King’s Lynn, Norfolk, aged 75. He competed in Formula One mainly for Team Lotus between 1963 and 1966, entering 13 World Championship Grands Prix (11 starts) and scoring 12 points. Before F1, he was highly successful in junior categories, winning the British Formula Junior championship in 1962 and 1963 and major races such as the Monaco Formula Junior event in 1961 and 1962, marking him as one of Britain’s most promising young drivers. Arundell’s greatest successes in Formula One came in 1964, when he finished third in both the Monaco and Dutch Grands Prix, achieving two podiums and briefly emerging as a future star alongside teammate Jim Clark. However, his career was severely affected by a major crash in a Formula Two race at Reims in 1964, which caused serious injuries and forced him to miss most of the 1965 season. Although he returned in 1966, he struggled to regain his earlier form, failed to achieve further notable results, and retired from Formula One that year without any wins or championships; he left racing entirely by 1969.
