Description

Tony Adamowicz (Anthony Peter Adamowicz) was born on May 2, 1941, in Moriah, New York, and died on October 10, 2016, in Costa Mesa, California. He was an American racing driver of Polish descent, nicknamed “A2Z,” who built a diverse and successful career across multiple disciplines of motorsport. Starting in the early 1960s, Adamowicz first gained attention racing a Volvo 544 and later joined Bob Tullius’s Group 44 team, where he achieved early Trans-Am success. His breakthrough came in 1968 when he won the Under 2-Liter class of the Trans-Am Championship driving a Porsche 911T, followed by victory in the 1969 SCCA Continental Championship (Formula 5000) with an Eagle Mark 5-Chevrolet. He also competed in endurance racing, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Daytona 24 Hours, and made a single Formula One appearance at the 1971 Questor Grand Prix. Adamowicz’s career was marked by both triumphs and challenges. His successes included championships in Trans-Am and Formula 5000, as well as strong performances in IMSA racing with Datsun/Nissan cars during the 1970s and 1980s. He became known for his versatility, competing in open-wheel, sports car, and endurance racing with equal skill. However, despite his talent, he never secured a long-term Formula One career, and his single F1 entry yielded no points. Later in life, he remained active in vintage racing until being diagnosed with brain cancer in 2015, which led to his passing in 2016. His legacy endures as one of the most accomplished and diverse American drivers of his generation, admired for his adaptability, technical skill, and engaging personality.
