The 1979 Toyota United States Grand Prix at Watkins Glen, held on October 7, 1979, was the final race of the Formula One season and the last F1 event ever run at the historic New York circuit. Run in cold, heavy rain, the race became a showcase for Gilles Villeneuve, who delivered one of his greatest drives by mastering the treacherous conditions, leading 54 of 59 laps, and winning by nearly 50 seconds over René Arnoux, with Didier Pironi finishing third. Pole‑sitter Alan Jones struggled in the wet, mechanical failures sidelined many contenders, and only 14 cars reached the finish. The event marked the end of Watkins Glen’s two‑decade tenure in Formula One, as financial and safety issues prevented the track from returning to the calendar.Collection
