Sister Joan Holden, CCVI was born on April 22, 1933, in Chicago, Illinois. She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word in 1951, took her first vows in 1954, and made her final vows in 1959. Sister Joan served in a variety of ministries in Missouri and Texas, including elementary education, parish ministry, hospital chaplaincy, and university campus ministry.
In August 1968, Sister Joan was one of the first Sisters in the United States to be called to parish work. She served in the newly established Incarnate Word Parish in Chesterfield, Missouri until 1975. In 1978, she received her master’s degree in theology from the Aquinas Institute of Theology in Dubuque, Iowa. This prepared her for service as a hospital chaplain. In 1986, Sister Joan earned a doctor of ministry degree from Eden Theological Seminary in St. Louis, which led her to campus ministry at Incarnate Word College in San Antonio. In the later years of her life, Sister ministered to patients with Alzheimer’ disease.
Sister Joan lived her life creatively; she was constantly writing and drawing. She shared her artistic gifts with her blood sister, Sister Alice Holden, CCVI, of whom she wrote: “We share family activities and congregational events together. Often we are mistaken for one another! We enjoy poetry, art and vacationing together.”

La hermana Joan Holden, CCVI, nació el 22 de abril de 1933 en Chicago, Illinois. Ingresó en la Congregación de las Hermanas de la Caridad del Verbo Encarnado en 1951, hizo sus primeros votos en 1954 y sus votos perpetuos en 1959. La hermana Joan prestó servicio en diversos ministerios en Misuri y Texas, entre ellos la educación primaria, el ministerio parroquial, la capellanía hospitalaria y el ministerio universitario.
En agosto de 1968, la hermana Joan fue una de las primeras hermanas de Estados Unidos en ser llamada al trabajo parroquial. La hermana Joan falleció en San Antonio, Texas, el 20 de diciembre de 2018.
