This Annunciation scene does not have a signature or recorded artist. However, it is a well-executed painting in very good condition. It appears to be modeled after the imagery of a 19th Century French prayer card and features the caption, “Ave Maria Gratia Plena,” “Hail Mary, Full of Grace.” A small pencil marking in the corner, which appears to read “Sr. [Sister] M,” could indicate that this painting was executed by a Sister.
In this painting, Mary kneels before her lectern with her eyes downcast. Her torso and haloed head are framed by a window that reveals a green landscape. The Angel Gabriel stands in front of her atop a cloud, one arm raised in blessing while the other hold lilies, a symbol of purity. There is a spinning wheel behind Gabriel which, in addition to signifying the Virgin's humility, alludes to Mary's "weaving" of Christ's flesh in her womb.
