In this black-and-white portrait photograph, Mother Mary John O’Shaughnessy, CCVI (1864 – 1938) sits in a chair and looks directly at the camera. She wears the traditional habit of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word (CCVI) and holds a Bible in her lap. A table, topped with a small standing crucifix, sits to her left.
Born in County Kerry Ireland, Mother Mary John was the first Irish General Superior of the CCVI Congregation. She entered the Congregation in 1883, made her first profession in 1886, and took her final vows in 1892. As described in a July 1938 obituary in the Southern Messenger, “Endowed with rare mental abilities, a zealous devotion to all that duty required, an amiable disposition and whole-hearted sympathy, Sister Mary John was admirably fitted for the various positions of trust confided to her in later years. Seven years of her early religious life were spent in teaching; for fourteen years she was mistress of novices; twelve years superioress-general of the congregation and, for twenty years, in two different administrations, assistant general, in which office, after a brief illness, she closed a useful and holy life.”
