Sister Margaret Gerken, CCVI (1927 – 2014) was born in Dyersville, Iowa on July 28, 1927. She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word in 1947, took her first vows in 1950, and made her final profession in 1955. Sister received her B.S. in Physical Education from Incarnate Word College in 1955 before receiving her M.A. in Health and Physical Education from the University of Texas in 1957. She taught physical education, art, and English at schools across Texas for most of her career.
Sister Margaret was one of six Sisters to receive their missionary cross in a sending ceremony in the Chapel of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio on August 23, 1964. She missioned as a teacher at San Francisco Parish in Chimbote, Peru until 1967. Sister described her time in Peru as “the highlight of [her] religious life.”
Sister spent the latter portion of her career in parish ministry after receiving her M.S. in Theology from Oblate College in 1982. She served as director of spiritual education for parishes in Lamesa, Brownwood, and Kingsville, Texas. From 1996 to 1997, Sister took a sabbatical at Villa St. Dominic in Glascoe, New York, where she spent time taking art classes and working on her paintings.
In 2014, Sister Elia Rosas, CCVI wrote of Sister Margaret’s artistic ability, stating, “Sister has been endowed with many talents [such] as painting beautiful artwork.” Sister Margaret passed away on November 4, 2014 in San Antonio, Texas.Research Type

Sor Margaret Gerken, CCVI (1927-2014) nació en Dyersville, Iowa, el 28 de julio de 1927. Ingresó en la Congregación de las Hermanas de la Caridad del Verbo Encarnado en 1947, emitió sus primeros votos en 1950 e hizo su profesión perpetua en 1955. Impartió clases de educación física, arte e inglés en escuelas de todo Texas durante la mayor parte de su carrera.

La hermana dedicó la última parte de su carrera al ministerio parroquial tras obtener su maestría en Teología en el Oblate College en 1982.
