Title [assigned by archives]: St. John the Baptist with Lamb
Sister Mary Baptist Courtney (1875 – 1939) depicted her namesake, St. John the Baptist, in this painting, which is her only documented artwork. St. John the Baptist appears as a child, his curly hair surrounded by golden rays of light. Sister Mary Baptist includes the hallmarks of the Saint’s iconography: a camel’s hair tunic, a long cross, and a scroll with the inscription “Ecce Agnus Dei,” “behold the Lamb of God.” St. John looks into the distance with his arm wrapped around a lamb, who gazes towards him.
